Start of School Safety Tips

School is back in session and with comes busy people with busy schedules. It is very easy for us to get caught up in the activity and to let the safety consideration slide. These simple common sense tips are a reminder of items to keep in mind.

College and Graduate Students

  • Walk in a group, and walk with confidence.
  • Never prop doors open. Not only are you putting yourself in danger, but everyone else residing in that building as well!
  • Always lock the door to your room whether or not you are there. Be certain that your door is locked when you go to sleep, and keep windows closed and locked when you are not home.
  • Never admit strangers into secured buildings.
  • Report all suspicious activity immediately to Security Services at x6400Record all information on valuables (make, model, serial number, value) Keep these records on file in case items turn up missing.
  • Be aware of your surroundings; avoid shortcuts through dark, secluded areas. Stay where other people are visible.
  • Lock your car whenever it is unattended, both on and off campus.
  • Watch for children around campus and school busses picking up and dropping off.

Children and School Bus Safety

  • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.
  • When the bus is approaching your stop, stay away from the bus until the driver gives the signal that it's okay to approach.
  • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus, especially on rainy or snowy days.
  • When exiting the bus, walk at least ten feet away. Keeping a safe distance from the bus insures the driver will always be able to see you.
  • Be aware traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Don't assume that drivers will give you the right of way.
